Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. better known by his stage name Lil Wayne is an American rapper. Wayne's first contact with hip-hop was listening to local Cash Money Records artists like Pimp Daddy and U.N.L.V. Later he credited them as his earliest influences.

Lil Wayne began rapping at block parties as a child. His performance at one of the parties caught the ear of the Cash Money rapper from the neighborhood Lil Slim. He gave Lil Wayne his phone number. Lil Wayne went on an autograph-signing session with Lil Slim, where he met Williams the brothers, owners of Cash Money Records.

The free styling abilities of Lil Wayne impressed "Birdman" and "Slim", but they were reluctant to sign him. Then at the age of eleven, Wayne started to record freestyles on Birdman's answering machine and would frequently visit Cash Money offices. When Birdman saw so much engagement in the young rapper, he signed him.
